Conroy Center Hosts ‘Scribes’ Conference in Ridgeland
Books
With more than a dozen awards and honors to its credit, the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy, edited by novelist Nicole Seitz and Conroy Center executive director Jonathan Haupt, has been the subject of more than 50 events across ten states, featuring (thus far) 54 of the volume’s 67 contributing writers.
Summer brings more great opportunities for writers to engage with one another through three more online workshops from the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center. Each workshop will be held on Zoom and is limited to 15 participants. Registration is now open through Eventbrite at https://patconroyliterarycenter.eventbrite.com.
Susan Beckham Zurenda heads to Beaufort with her debut novel Bells for Eli
By Margaret Evans, Editor
I’ve known Susan Beckham Zurenda for a good long time. She’s been popping in and out of Beaufort – and my editorial life – for years now, as a publicist with Magic Time Literary Publicity. I knew she had fantastic taste in books, a great work ethic, and a charming cocktail party personality. What I did not know – over all those years we worked together promoting novels – was that Susie was, herself, an award-winning short fiction writer and aspiring novelist.
On Tuesday, July 28, also at 5:30 p.m., the Pat Conroy Literary Center will host a lively conversation between the Queen of Southern Cuisine Nathalie Dupree and Beaufort's own award-winning cookbook author Debbi Covington as they discuss the recently published Nathalie Dupree’s Favorite Stories and Recipes.
An excerpt from a novel in progress by David Kiser
In March of this year, David Kiser of Anderson, South Carolina, was selected as the first recipient of a Pat Conroy Literary Center Writers Residency. David stayed for 10 days at the Marshsong Cottage of residency benefactor Mary Ellen Thompson, during which time he made great progress on his first novel and his nonfiction history of music in the Palmetto State. David is an adjunct professor of piano at Anderson University and host of “On the Keys” on South Carolina Public Radio. An excerpt from his novel-in-progress is reprinted here with the author’s permission.
On Thursday, June 18, at 5:30 p.m., the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will host a free public program with novelist Johnnie Bernhard, author of Sisters of the Undertow. Books will be available for sale and signing after the author's presentation. Weather permitting, this event will be held on the plaza in front of the Conroy Center at 905 Port Republic Street in downtown Beaufort. The author event will also be livestreamed on the Conroy Center’s Facebook page and made available on the Center’s YouTube channel afterwards.
