The friendship of Pat Conroy and Bernie Schein is near legendary in these parts. Not only does Bernie show up as a character in most of Pat’s books, but anybody who ever saw the two together will attest to the depth of their devotion. It was a real love match, albeit complicated.
In fact, says Bernie, it was a bona fide “bromance,” complete with petty resentments, mutual betrayals, a devastating breakup, and a joyful reconciliation.
When I’m stumped for a column topic, my husband typically quips, “write about the outrage.” It’s a little joke we’ve been batting back and forth for years now.
It’s early on the morning of July 5th and I’m at my desk, catching up on yesterday’s work.
It was the least Fourthy Fourth I can remember at our house, with nary a dash of pomp nor circumstance. I just wasn’t feeling it. But old habits die hard, so I took the day off. It seemed the patriotic thing to do.
Last issue, something I saw on Facebook got me noodling on the notion that plants might feel pain. Though that theory didn’t exactly pan out, I did learn something about plants that kind of blew my mind: They communicate with each other! Many of you already knew this, but I’m a notoriously late bloomer. Pardon the pun.
