The year of Covid-19 is also the year when The Beaufort Garden Club needed to install a new Board of Directors. It’s usually quite a lovely ceremony with formal speeches, lighted candles and the giving and receiving of flowers from the old to the new Board and the passing of the wooden meeting gavel from the outgoing President to the Incoming President.
Years ago, when a friend told me that he and his wife were cosmologists, my uninformed reply was something like, “Oh, do you all have a salon together?”
Take a walk with me (six feet apart!). Right up front I’ll tell you that this is not a power walk. Our goal is not to rack up 10,000 steps. Instead, our pace will be that of a good old fashioned lollygagging stroll. Let’s turn into Pigeon Point Park. Step off the sidewalk onto the crunch of the fine gravel path that meanders through the park among islands of gardenia, azalea, and hydrangea shrubs often quivering with busy butterflies and bees.
I suppose I should add armadillos, too. These are the creatures who make our lawns and gardens look like bombed-out battlefields. Especially if you have dogs who like to dig craters at their tunnels. I have four of those little guys that do and they like to sleep with me, too. No matter how often I brush or bathe them, I still have to vacuum my bed to remove the sand lest I have a nocturnal exfoliating treatment.
In observance of the COVID-19 pandemic and for the safety and well being of everyone involved with the Garden Tour, the 2020 All Saints Garden Tour (ASGT) has been cancelled. It is with great sadness that this decision was made, primarily because of the impact on our grant recipients who will be in greater need than ever.
One of my first horticulture experiences involved my grandparents and a sandbox. They appropriated my sandbox – I guess I’d outgrown it, if that’s possible. It was in a sunny garden area beside their house. I thought their yard was a magical place. Tall pine trees provided all the straw they could ever use as mulch and gave a cathedral like presence to the whole property.
