The season has started. This time of year is always busy for me, doing my least favorite type of appraisal... moving damage claims. I just hate looking at crunched Chippendale chairs or shattered Irish crystal. Most shippers spend time and money training their staff members to properly pack and ship antiques and fragile items. Most packers do try hard to protect your possessions using what they learned. There are also a few shippers who don’t take the precautionary measures they should, usually to save money. Even with the most careful handling, accidents do happen.
The quintessential Lowcountry artist talks about his life, his work, the future of art without public funding, the culture of rice, copycats, and the joy of coming home.
When Jonathan Green came into the world, he brought with him an inescapable sign of his specialness. He was born wearing a caul, an inner fetal membrane that covered his head at birth. In some societies, this is interpreted as a token of great luck or that this child will never know death by drowning. But in the Gullah society along the South Carolina coast, it insures that the child is touched by an uncommonness and magic that will bring inordinate grace to the community. From the beginning, Jonathan Green was marked and grew up known as "the child of the veil." – Pat Conroy
The Filmmakers Have the Last Word on Why BIFF is Buff
Days after the curtain falls on the 2011 edition of the Beaufort International Film Festival the buzz still hangs in the air, crackling like some unseen static charge. The energy is palpable. The conversation is ongoing in the bars and restaurants and cafes. The filmmakers are gone, audiences dispersed, all evidence of the after-party is long since wiped away. For festival organizers/show-runners, Ron Tucker and Rebecca Berry, the eighteen-hour days and late night suppers at Huddle House are finally over – until next year.
The Loft @ City Hall presents BEAUFORT IN FOCUS, an exhibition of favorite sights of Beaufort and the Lowcountry presented by the Photography Club of Beaufort from March 3 through April 8th.
In yogic philosophy, the Fifth Chakra, or energy center in the body, is the Vishuddha Chakra, or Throat Chakra. It is located in the area of the throat and neck and is associated with knowledge and communication.
The word Vishuddha translates as “The Pure Place.” When we look at the idea of communication as “speaking our truth,” we have to qualify that speech. We should always speak our truth, our satya, but we should also make an effort to speak that truth with wisdom and compassion.
3rd Annual Beaufort Twilight Run and Oyster Roast set for March 19
What can top running or walking on a beautiful evening in early spring, watching the sun set over the picturesque marshes of Beaufort, and then enjoying a traditional oyster roast? Well, nothing, or at least that’s what organizers of the Beaufort Twilight Run and Oyster Roast think. Beaufort’s biggest running festival, which happens annually on the third Saturday in March, has been a very successful fundraiser for Riverview Charter School, and a huge draw for Beaufort. With over 1,300 participants in the 8K Run, 5K Fun Walk, Kid’s Fun Run and Oyster Roast in 2010, the race is slated for an even bigger crowd in 2011.
The Beaufort Art Association is excited to feature the newest additions to its gallery membership in a special exhibit that will run through April 2nd. A reception for the artists was held on February 25th at the BAA Gallery, located in the historic Elliott House, 1001 Bay Street at the corner of Charles.
Nine “new” artists began exhibiting with the BAA in 2010. As a way to recognize and welcome them, the BAA is currently displaying their work in the Featured Artists’ room.
We became close friends with a couple who moved into our community about four years ago. We did a lot of mutual entertaining. Last spring, the husband surfaced at our house and asked for their house keys back because they were making changes to their alarm system. The keys were never returned, and we gradually stopped hearing from them. My wife is upset because she feels that perhaps she did something wrong.
Back pain is an issue that almost every American will suffer from in their lifetime. Many experts predict that with today’s increased lack of activity and sedentary lifestyles, the problem will only get worse and worse. If you have ever found yourself sitting with nagging back pain, thinking that the pain is never going to go away, then you know what I’m talking about. If you ever have the fear that you will be bedridden, missing days of work, or the possibility of surgery has crossed your mind, then you are not alone. The statistics related to back pain are unbelievable. Here are just a few:
I want to start this column out with a Big! High-five to the Ladies and Gents of Beaufort in especial, the town in which I operate, for their fine fashion statement at our very own Beaufort International Film Festival!
You did us proud in FASHIONGRANNY”S critical eye. Thank You!
You didn’t forget how to rise to the occasion and wasn’t it fun? I thoroughly enjoyed myself, not just playing dress-up, but living it!
